The Mortal Hydra
Hydra are a genus of aquatic organisms that appear to be biologically immortal; they do not age. However, as with all living things, they are still subject to the forces inherent in their ecosystems; a subtle change of salinity perhaps, or a sudden change of temperature might kill them. Certainly they could not thrive out of water, nor might they survive an attack of parasites, or disease. Indeed, they are small and fragile, despite their regenerative nature and the world in which they are able to live, which at first appears to be endless, sustaining and bountiful, is doubtless bound, claustrophobically, within a knife-edge of tolerances.
