The North

  • To Antarcticans, all that lies north of 60˚ South (~83% of the Earth) is The North and all the people in it are Northeners.

  • As there are no indigenous peoples of Antarctica, nor are there any permanent residents, to Antarcticans the word “Northener” is synonymous with the word “humanity”.

  • Thus an Antarctican may reasonably declare, “We’re all Northerners” and refer to the greater proportion of the Earth as, “The North”, the inference being that anywhere not referred to as “The North” is Antarctica.

  • In everyday use, as part of Antarctican contemplative and art-making practice, “The North” and “Northerner” are shorthands for describing anywhere that isn’t Antarctica and anyone who isn’t from or a permanent resident of Antarctica (which is everyone).

  • Broadly, this facilitates the articulation of the Peaceful Order’s primary mission: to become attuned to the lessons Antarctica has to offer Northeners, for the mutual benefit of Antarctica and The North; to offer through the medium of art-making: insight, healing and beauty, arising from the orchard of Antartican contemplative practices and their outputs.
